Okay, so I saw this thing online about using a yoga mat to help with watering plants, and I thought, “Why not?” I’m not the best at keeping my plants alive, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I’m always looking for easier ways to manage stuff around the house, and if this worked, it’d be a game-changer.

Getting Started
First, I grabbed my old yoga mat – the one I never actually use for yoga. It’s been sitting in the corner collecting dust, so this was a good excuse to finally do something with it. Then I found the scissors and measured my plant tray to cut my old yoga mat.
The Process
- I cut the yoga mat into strips. I wasn’t super precise about it, just eyeballed it. The strips were maybe 2 inches wide, give or take.
- Then, I filled my sink with water. I just turned the faucet on and let it run until it was about halfway full. No need for fancy measurements.
- I soaked the yoga mat strips in the water. I made sure they were completely submerged, kind of like letting them take a little bath.
- Next, I placed one end of each strip in the bottom of my plant tray. I have this long, rectangular tray that I put all my smaller potted plants in.
- I made sure the other end of each strip was still in the water in the sink. So, basically, the strips were acting like bridges between the sink and the tray.
Fingers Crossed!
I left everything like that overnight. I was a little nervous, not gonna lie. What if it didn’t work and my plants ended up even more dehydrated? Or what if it worked too well and I ended up with a flood in my kitchen?
But, when I checked in the morning, it actually looked pretty good! The soil in the pots was damp, not soaking wet, but definitely more moist than before. The water level in the sink had gone down a bit, so it seemed like the yoga mat strips had done their job and wicked the water up to the plants.
I’m still keeping an eye on things, but so far, so good! It’s not a perfect system, and I probably wouldn’t rely on it if I was going away for a long time, but for a day or two? Seems like it works! I might even try this again. It’s definitely easier than remembering to water each plant individually.
