Okay, so I’ve been trying to find a good replacement for the hack squat machine because, well, my gym doesn’t have one. And honestly, I’m not always a fan of waiting around for equipment. I’ve been digging around and found that a barbell can actually do the trick, and I gave it a shot. Here’s how it went down.

Getting Started
First things first, I loaded the barbell with a weight I felt comfortable with. I didn’t want to go too heavy to start because, you know, new exercise and all. I made sure the barbell was on the floor behind me, kinda like I was about to do a deadlift, but the bar was at my heels.
The Setup
I stood with my feet about shoulder-width apart, maybe a little wider. Then, I squatted down and grabbed the bar with an overhand grip, hands also about shoulder-width. The tricky part was keeping my back straight and my chest up – kinda like a deadlift posture, but, it is different.
- Feet shoulder-width apart.
- Barbell behind me, close to my heels.
- Overhand grip, hands shoulder-width.
Doing the Squat
With everything set, I took a deep breath, braced my core, and started to stand up. The key here was to push through my heels. I really focused on using my quads to lift the weight. The bar moved straight up, close to my body, almost grazing my calves and hamstrings. It felt awkward at first, ngl, but I got the hang of it after a couple of reps.
Reaching the Top
Once I was standing all the way up, I squeezed my glutes, just like with a regular squat. I tried to keep everything tight and controlled. No leaning back or anything weird.
Going Down
Then, it’s all about reversing the movement. I slowly bent at my knees and hips, lowering the barbell back down. Keeping that back straight was crucial. I make sure that the barbell is going straight down, keeping it as close to my body as possible, and not letting it drift forward. And it is back to the starting position.

My Thoughts
I did a few sets of these, and man, I could really feel it in my quads. It definitely hit similar muscles as the hack squat machine, but it felt, I dunno, more “raw,” maybe because it’s a free weight movement. It’s a bit awkward at first, especially with balance, but I could definitely see this being a solid alternative. Also, it’s a huge plus that I don’t have to wait for a machine!
One last word of advice, do not be a hero and start very light to make sure to get good form first, and prevent injuries.
