Alright, so today I wanna share my little DIY project: essential oil yoga mat spray. Honestly, I was tired of buying those overpriced sprays at the store, and plus, I wanted something that smelled exactly how I wanted it to. So, here’s how I went about it.

First things first, I did some digging online. I mean, gotta see what the “experts” were saying, right? Most recipes seemed pretty similar, so I figured I couldn’t screw it up too badly.
Here’s what I gathered for my concoction:
- Distilled water (because tap water…eh, I dunno, just seemed cleaner).
- Witch hazel (supposedly it helps the oils mix better and also has some cleaning properties).
- Essential oils (this is where the fun begins!).
- A spray bottle (duh!).
Okay, so I grabbed a clean, empty spray bottle. I think it used to have window cleaner in it, but I washed it out like, a million times with soap and hot water. Figured that was good enough.
Then I measured out the witch hazel and distilled water. I didn’t really follow a strict recipe, more like eyeballed it. I’d say it was about 1/4 witch hazel and 3/4 distilled water. Don’t quote me on that, though.
Now for the fun part: the essential oils! I decided to go with a blend of:
- Tea tree oil (because, you know, antibacterial properties and all that jazz).
- Lavender oil (because it smells amazing and is supposed to be relaxing).
- Eucalyptus oil (for a little extra clean, fresh scent).
I started with about 5 drops of each oil. I figured I could always add more if it wasn’t strong enough. I carefully dropped them into the witch hazel/water mixture.

I screwed the spray nozzle back on and gave it a good shake. And then… the moment of truth! I sprayed it onto my yoga mat. At first, I was a little worried because it seemed kinda wet, but it dried pretty quickly.
Okay, the smell… it was okay. The tea tree was a little stronger than I wanted. So, I added a couple more drops of lavender to balance it out. Shook it again, sprayed it again. Much better!
My final recipe (ish):
- 1/4 witch hazel
- 3/4 distilled water
- 5 drops tea tree oil
- 7 drops lavender oil
- 5 drops eucalyptus oil
I’ve been using it for a few weeks now, and I gotta say, I’m pretty happy with it. My yoga mat smells fresh, and it feels good knowing exactly what’s going on it. Plus, I saved a bunch of money. Winning!
Lessons learned:
- Start small with the essential oils. You can always add more, but you can’t take them out!
- Shake well before each use. The oils tend to separate.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment with different oil blends to find what you like.
Give it a try! It’s super easy and way cheaper than buying the store-bought stuff. Let me know what oil combinations you end up using!
