Alright, let me tell you about my recent little DIY project: the double yoga mat situation!

So, I’ve been trying to get more into yoga lately, right? But my apartment floor is kinda hard, and one yoga mat just wasn’t cutting it. My knees were screaming! I started looking online for thicker mats, but man, they’re expensive! Plus, I already had a perfectly good yoga mat lying around. Then it hit me: why not just combine two?
First, I grabbed my old yoga mat. You know, the standard, kinda thin one. Then, I remembered I had a second, slightly thicker but equally worn yoga mat stashed in the closet. Score! I unrolled both of them and laid them out on the floor side by side.
Okay, now for the tricky part. I eyeballed how much overlap I wanted. I didn’t want a huge ridge in the middle, but I also wanted enough surface area to actually be comfortable. After a bit of fiddling, I decided on about a 4-inch overlap.
Next, I took a ruler and a marker and drew a straight line along the overlapping edges of both mats. This was my guide for cutting. I wanted a clean, straight cut, not some jagged mess.
Then came the cutting. I used a utility knife with a fresh blade. This is important! A dull blade will just tear the mat. I carefully followed the lines I had drawn, pressing down firmly and making several passes to ensure a clean cut. This part took a bit of time and patience, but it was worth it.
Once both mats were cut, I removed the excess material. Now I had two mats with clean, straight edges ready to be joined.

For the joining, I decided to try some heavy-duty double-sided tape. I bought a roll from the hardware store, making sure it was rated for outdoor use and could handle some pressure. I applied the tape along the entire length of the overlapping area, making sure to press it down firmly onto both mats.
Finally, I peeled off the backing from the tape and carefully aligned the two mats, pressing them together. I walked along the seam, applying even pressure to ensure a strong bond.
And that was it! Double yoga mat achieved!
Now, I’m not gonna lie, it’s not perfect. There’s still a tiny ridge where the mats join, but it’s way less noticeable than I expected. And more importantly, my knees are much happier! I’ve used it for a few yoga sessions now, and it’s a game-changer. It’s way more comfortable, and I can actually focus on the poses instead of the pain in my joints.
It’s not the prettiest solution, and it might not last forever, but for a free and quick fix, I’m pretty stoked with how it turned out. Plus, it’s a great way to reuse old mats instead of just throwing them away. Definitely worth a try if you’re looking for a cheap and easy way to upgrade your yoga experience!
